That window between the end of winter and mid-spring when the birds return can be a dull time for your cat, i.e., if your cat is like my Sophie. Sophie loves watching the squirrel chases and geese fights in the backyard. When the yard is empty, she is bored.
One way to entertain your cat is with a fish tank. Imagine lovely saltwater fish swimming around, catching her attention. More so than freshwater fish which tend to be more muted in color, salt water fish come in a stunning array of colors. Of course, that’s more for you than your cat since cats don’t see color. To make it even more interesting, you can add some live coral to give your fish hiding places.
The important thing to remember that a bored cat is one that is liable to gain weight. Without sufficient stimulus, she’s likely to spend more time sleeping than being active. Whether it be the squirrels in the yard or the fish in the tank, giving your cat mental stimulation improves her well-being. She maintains that kitten-like playfulness that makes having a cat so much fun.
An intelligent cat can soon get bored with toys. The stimulation of a tank of live fish will entertain her for hours. Of course, your set up must be with a cat in mind. A sturdy cover for your tank is a must. Be careful too of wires in back of the tank for a light and other accessories. These should be kept well out of your cat’s reach.
Having a fish tank is one way to give your cat mental stimulation that will make her a better pet.
