For us, our lives are so enriched because we made the decision to bring Sophie into our home. Welcome to Adopt-a-Cat Month!

I won’t harp on about the sobering statistics of abandoned cats. Rather, I will tell you about the benefits of owning a cat. If you have a cat, you will immediately understand. The relationship you have with a cat is different than that of a dog. Trust is a vital component. A dog will learn to trust and obey you with a few snacks. Cats need time to make a decision.

Sophie and I have a special bond. Every evening, she curls up on the couch with me, trying to get as close as she can. When I go to sleep at night, she is at my side, next to my heart. She communicates with us through a variety of special calls, coos, and sounds.

She lets me play with her teeth, her face. She takes food from my hand. Ours is a relationship of trust.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t dislike dogs. I adore them. I enjoy the nuances of the relationship that you can have with each of the pets. Sophie and I have been able to forge a bond like none that I have had with any other pet. For that, I will be grateful all of my days.

Now that I’m freelance, I have to buy my pet supplies online rather than enjoy the employee discount I used to have. That’s when I stumbled upon Entirely Pets.

Sophie has a special diet consisting of Wellness cat foods and C.E.T. cat treats. Unfortunately, neither are available at the neighborhood pet store. Since we live so far from town, online sales were my only option. That’s when I found Entirely Pets through Amazon.

Amazon is fantastic anyway for purchasing, being THE model for how online sales should operate. Entirely Pets responded to my order the same day. The order was shipped the next day, and I received the shipping info.

To my delight, the order arrived two days early, something I don’t usually expect from UPS. Needless to say, I was delighted. With the included coupon for free shipping, I’ll definitely shop again with Entirely Pets. Highly recommended!

If there’s anything that a cat loves more it is stability. Cats are not tolerant of changes in the routine. Everything must play out as it has yesterday and the day before. The best way to do this is to have a permanent home.

People like pets become established in a permanent home. We derive a lot of comfort from a place that we can call home. That’s one idea that makes home buyer tax credit so attractive. You have your home.

As a first-time home buyer, you can receive up to $8,000 tax credit for buying a new home. That’s a lot of catnip. Even existing homeowners can benefit with homeowners who have lived in a current home consecutively for 5 of the past 8 years can receiving up to a $6,500 tax credit.

Moving is stressful on everyone in your household, including your pets. Having an established home gives all of you the peace of mind of having that place that you can call home.

Home buyer tax credits are one way that you can capitalize on the desire to create stability in your home environment. A home where everything happens as it should, with no surprises or changes, is the best kind of home. Grab your dream and get yours today.

I think moving has to be the most stressful thing I’ve ever had to deal with. Moving out of state is especially hard. Think about it. Your world is thrown upside down. Your safe haven is gone. There’s no place now where you can kick back, feel uninhibited. Now think about that in terms of your pet’s perspective.

To ease the stress of moving, I’ve done a couple things. First of all, keep your pets in one room. Clear out the rest of the house. With doors opening in and out, there are so many opportunities for your pet to bolt, and bolt is what they will do. All the noise and confusion is sure to spook your pet. Once the house is cleared out, move the pet to another room and clear out the one they were in. Make sure the room you place your pet has some familiar objects like a bed, food bowls, litter box, etc. If you’re using a carrier, it might be a good idea to leave it open in the room. You may be pleasantly surprised to find your pet inside the carrier when you come to get him. Saves you the hassle of stuffing her in there yourself.

Some people will use tranquilizers that you can get from your vet. I don’t know as if I’d use them, but judge for yourself. Your pet’s comfort is what is best. What you probably want is the move to be done and over as quickly as possible. Consider hiring a moving company like Los Angeles Office Movers. The sooner you can get moved, the sooner you and your pet can regain your sense of calm and security.

Moves are inevitable sometimes. By considering your pet’s perspective, you can help ease the transition.

She lived to be 17 years old. We had a good, long life together. It took awhile, but I of course, did get another cat, Sophie. I think Sophie and I are even closer than ever.

The sad thing I recall from losing Ruby is that I could only find one photograph of her. Through all those years, somehow the pictures were lost. I’m sure too that Ruby would prefer that I had another picture of her than the one I have. She really was a beautiful cat.

Not sure why, but I thought about her today. It may me realize that I had better get on it. With cell phone cameras, there’s no reason not to photograph your pet. Take pictures, put them on Flickr, Facebook, where ever, but take them. Take them so you’ll have memories you can cherish if you lose your pet.

There are so many good reasons to microchip your pet, just ask Chloe Rushby, who was reunited with her childhood pet after nine years.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals found the missing Muffy. A scan for a microchip led Muffy to her joyous reunion. Without the microchip, Chloe and Muffy may never have seen each other again.

The microchip itself is about the size of a grain of rice. It is injected into the body of the pet, not unlike getting a routine vaccination. The needle is a bit bigger, so young pets are often microchipped during a spay or neuter when sedated. Other than the normal soreness after a shot, your pet will not know it’s there.

The pet must be registered with the microchip company after being chipped. It is important to keep contact information up-to-date. If the unthinkable happens, accurate information will reunite you with your pet that much sooner.

No one knows what happened to poor Muffy those nine years while lost. Thanks to a microchip, she can enjoy many more happy years with her grateful family.

Much to Sophie’s delight, we are back from our vacation. We had a marvelous time. According to the pet sitter, Sophie did well too. She received plenty of attention and was fed regularly. What more can a cat want? She’s not a super traveler, so a 7-hour car trip was out. I’m not entirely sure how she would take to flying. So, she stayed home.

Sophie can be a needy cat. She was a rescue, after all. She’s a bit predictable after a vacation. Like most cats, she hates a disruption to her routine. She likes her meals at a set time. She wants me on the couch to cuddle at the designated time. So, when we returned, she had a lot to say.

Perhaps your own pet is like Sophie. I’m not sure if it’s her history or what, but it takes her awhile to ease back into her routine. She is more needy than ever for the first few days. She wants to be held a great deal. Maybe this sounds familiar to you too. To help her transition back to having you around again, take the time to bond again with your pet. Spend extra time combing or brushing your pet. Extra cuddle time is also appreciated.

While we realize our trip is short, it can be interpreted differently by your pet. Making up the lost time can be a great bonding experience for you and your pet.

It’ll be 10 days with virtually no cell phone coverage, peace and quiet, and plenty of time to reconnect with my husband and my family.

That’s the plus side of it. On the down side, Sophie is staying home alone. Taking her is really not an option. She travels OK, but I don’t see her doing all right in a tent. In the past, I have boarded her at a vet clinic. I speak from experience: this is not the way to go. Avoid boarding in a kennel situation at all costs. Caging a cat goes against everything that a cat is. IMHO, it is cruel. Cats are not that adaptable. Rather, cats enjoy a routine. Disruptions to the usual are viewed with the up most disdain, to say nothing of the stress. In good conscience, I could not board my Sophie ever again.

Instead, for the last few years, I’ve hired a pet sitter. My pet sitter is part of the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. She is local. She is bonded. On the practical side, someone is visiting my house every day. There’s a feeling of security in that. My mail, if not stopped, is being checked. My plants are watered. It’s a good set up for me. For Sophie, the benefits are huge.

She stays home where her bed is, where her backyard birdie friends hang out, where her own food dish is. The disruption of her routine is minimal. For me, I have the satisfaction of knowing that someone is looking in on her. She is getting attention and love every day, even if it isn’t from her first choice. Her routine is still in her routine.

I encourage all pet owners to explore having a pet sitter call as an option. The benefits exist for both the owner and the pet. If you must be away, won’t you feel more comfortable knowing that your pet is getting one-on-one attention?

Anyone who has had both a cat and a dog for a pet will agree: the relationship you have with a cat is very different than that you have with a dog. Cats relate to people on a different level. My own relationship with Sophie illustrates this.

Sophie is a very vocal cat. Over the time that we’ve had her, she has developed her own vocabulary. Different sounds mean different things. When she’s hungry, there’s a certain vocalization. When she wants to bond, there is another vocalization. Paying attention to the particular sound a pet makes before signaling something to you is a great way to bond with your pet. You establish communication between the two of you.

My cat is very smart. She figures out things quickly. We try to challenge her too, with switching out toys, playing games that encourage her to find something. We challenge her, and she responds. It’s a good relationship.

There are other ways to bond with your pet. Establishing a schedule or routine is another way to create this bond. Sophie gets fed at 4:00 p.m. every afternoon. Afterwards, she gets her yummy, i.e., her C.E.T. cat treat. My husband makes a game of it with her, encouraging her to chase it around and fetch it for him.

Bonding with your pet on a more intimate level is beneficial to both you and your pet. Take the time to learn about your pet ,and the quality of your relationship will improve vastly.
